We think of balance as something static– but my experience of balance is more like mad dashes back and forth across the teetertotter– not static at all, but overall, questing balance.
I am a lover of kinetic sculpture and mobiles, not all, usually those boasting the simpler forms. This one is above the bed, paddles made of foam, created for me by the wondrous Rachel of the Wonderland Studio (etsy).
It reminds me of whimsy, of impermanence, of beauty, of shadows. I chose it because there is so much light at night in our apartment, shadows are cast on the wall above the bed. The mobile is in constant silent motion, and it makes me very happy.
When I think: I need more balance! I should remember the slow revolutions of the mobile– little cycles within bigger ones, harmony in spite of the fact that these parts are going this way, and those parts are going that way… the whole thing works.
Not only does it work, it somehow holds itself together …
